ALISSA VOLCHKOVA

Alissa Volchkova is a Franco-Russian designer. After several years of experience in architecture, Alissa changed the scale of her work by producing objects.

Following her passion for design objects, she graduated with a master degree from the Royal College of Art in London which gave her the opportunity to exhibit her first project “The Beautiful Imperfect” in Saatchi Gallery. She then started collaborating with different institutions such as the Design Museum Gent, Temple Newsam - Leeds Museums and many galleries participating in various design shows around the world.

Based in Paris, Alissa challenges the perception of everyday objects and surrounding materials by developing their capacities and new aspects. She is interested in experimenting different materials and techniques of production, rather than in the aesthetic of objects and their final aspect. Mutation, transformation and irregularity define her work. Alissa finds beauty in imperfection.

« Je réétudie les méthodes de production industrielles répétitives, pour créer paradoxalement des objets irréguliers et imprévisibles. En effet, ces séries de vases sont constituées de 2 parties : la première partie (le socle) est soufflée dans un moule. La deuxième partie est la continuité du moule, un excès de verre formé aléatoirement qui est généralement retiré (coupé) dans le soufflage du verre considéré comme un défaut. Je le garde et profite de ce « défaut » en jouant avec, en l'exagérant, pour créer une variation de vases qui ne seront jamais identiques. »

“ I am revisiting the industrial and repetitive methods of production, to paradoxically create irregular and unpredictable objects. Indeed, these series of vases are made of 2 parts: the first part - the base – is blown into a mould. The second part is the continuity of the mould – an excess of glass formed randomly, and that is usually removed (cut) in glass blowing, considered as a defect. I am keeping and taking advantage of this ‘defect’ by playing with it, exaggerating it, to create a variation of vases that will never be identical. ”
